Lalique x James Turrell | Range Rider Perfume Extract
The Range Rider Perfume Extract is a monumental collaboration between the legendary French crystal house Lalique and the world-renowned American light and space artist James Turrell. Launched in 2022, this project marks the first time in Turrell's five-decade career that he has worked on a small, intimate scale.
The Concept: Olfactory Architecture
Turrell describes Range Rider as a "concentration of skies, horizons, and light." The fragrance is an homage to the Great American West—specifically the rugged, sun-drenched landscapes of Arizona—and is inspired by Zane Grey’s legendary novel Riders of the Purple Sage.
The Scent: Created in close collaboration with Lalique’s master perfumers, the extract captures the raw, atmospheric essence of the range. It is a robust, "animalic" composition that balances heat and grit with refined luxury.
Top Notes: Citrus and Pink Pepper, providing a sharp, bright opening that mimics the clarity of desert light.
Heart Notes: Sage and Leather, evoking the scent of "sage-scratched leather chaps" and the wild flora of the Arizona plains.
Base Notes: Amber and Animalic Musk, which ground the fragrance with a deep, lingering warmth that suggests the end of a long day on the ranch.
The Art Object: The Crystal Flacon
The bottle is not merely a container but a genuine work of art, designed by Turrell to manipulate and diffuse light in the same way as his large-scale installations (like Roden Crater).
Architectural Form: The shape is inspired by the stupas of Asia and the Egyptian pyramids—structures of spiritual value where light is an integral part of the design.
Crystal Craftsmanship: Each bottle is entirely handmade by Lalique’s master glassmakers. It is crafted from purple and sapphire blue crystal, requiring extreme technical virtuosity to achieve a uniform thickness that ensures the correct density and homogeneity of color.
Prismatic Effect: The precise geometry is designed to act as a prism, catching, diffracting, and vibrating light as it passes through the colored crystal.

Volume: 250ml is the primary collector's format; however, the project is frequently discussed in terms of its concentrated Perfume Extract strength.
Exclusivity: Limited to only 100 pieces worldwide (plus a handful of artist proofs).
Signature: Each piece is engraved with the signatures of both James Turrell and Lalique and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Awards: The collaboration won the Wallpaper Design Award for "Best Grooming Product" in 2023, recognized for its fusion of high art and olfactory innovation.
